Project Information
Bum Racing takes place in a similar world to ours. The people of this world have a rising homeless epidemic due to a massive depression brought about by [insert comedic reason here]. Even minor celebrities have become homeless, wandering the streets looking to make a dollar. Not wanting to give up their passion, and in an attempt to make any money they can, they join the newly formed Bum Racing League (BRL). Established by a morally bankrupt conglomerate, the BRL was formed in an attempt to bankroll off of the fall of their fellow humans. The game opens up with a player-chosen racer, beginning his path to a new and lucrative future.
Gameplay in Bum Racing is very similar and familiar to other racing games in some respects. The main objective is to be the first racer to reach the end of the track before the allotted time runs out. At his disposal, the player has a small arsenal or projectiles to aid the player in taking the lead. These projectile weapons are firing colostomy bags, trash, and other items in order to disrupt other players on the track. While the player is racing he can also make use of the various environmental hazards available for use, such as knocking down trees to create ramps, or causing rock slides, potentially falling and disrupting the other racers. While navigating the track, the player may find various shortcuts or powerups that will help them through the track. Although these points of interest are usually more dangerous or more challenging to go acquire, the payoff is well worth the effort.
My job was as the Lead. I managed a group of students, organized and helped produce the design document, produced assets when needed, and rigged the vehicle. This project was developed in the game prototyping class at the AI. This is usually the first real production class for games students at the AI that requires focused group work. Because of this it was also my job to advise and teach students on how to model, and keep a balanced art level amongst them.
